Great! Great! Seems to be the word of choice when our clients discuss their new facilities. October is a month of fantastic collaborative projects reaching completion and new projects picking up steam. These three great stories highlight some of this month’s activities in this month’s edition of flaSH [PDF].

MOHAVE COMMUNITY COLLEGE GRAND OPENING

SHARCHITECTURE designed the MCC Foundation Allied Health Training Center in conjunction with Martin Harris Construction. The MCC Foundation Allied Health Training Center is a specialty lab/classroom/administration building for an expanding program at the college. The training facility is designed to replicate actual hospital and ER conditions with patient cubicle work areas and nurses’ station layouts. The classrooms and labs are also linked for video conferencing, recording and broadcasting to remote campuses of the College. The 10,000 SF building includes administrative offices for the program, general purpose classrooms, allied health lab space and two specialty simulation labs with debriefing room.

LAS VEGAS BOULEVARD RETAIL RENAISSANCE

SHARCHITECTURE is excited to be a part of the renewed building activity on the Strip. We are designing a 3-story, 105,500 sf retail center that will include shops and restaurants and be connected to other properties by pedestrian bridges. The project is LEED registered and we anticipate a Gold rating. Construction will start in early 2011 on this locally-driven project. Las Vegas is seizing the opportunity to restart construction with sustainable projects, and we’re proud to have our work among the new set of forward-thinking buildings on the Las Vegas Strip.

RTC GRAND OPENING

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada and SHarchitecture celebrated the grand opening of the new “Green-frastructure” Bonneville Transit center in downtown Las Vegas. The 20,000 sf facility includes a multi-modal transfer station, bicycle storage and a bicycle repair shop. The RTC retained Sletten Construction to deliver the facility through the CMAR project delivery method. The project is AARA Stimulus-funded, LEED registered and Gold targeted. With a combined effort of the RTC, SHarchitecture and Wright Engineers, NV Energy provided a cash rebate of over $340,000 to the RTC for the installation of photovoltaic panels and additional energy savings strategies.

In 2002, Cashman Equipment was notified that a planned expansion to the adjacent interstate, interchange access ramps and main collector street would take seven of their existing 23 acres. The highway expansion would essentially consume the facility’s frontage, equipment sales and display and main access to the property. In addition, the new road design would raise the current street level 25 feet above the existing grade to clear the neighboring railroad tracks. This would effectively bury all visibility to the site and relocate the main access to a minor street at the rear of the property. Faced with the ultimate decision to relocate the company, this initiated a chain of events that CEO and Chairman, MaryKaye Cashman turned into a series of opportunities for the growing company. It doesn’t feel like the end of summer yet, but it’s time to go back to school! For the kids, teachers and administrators that are “hitting the books” – we salute you! These three great stories highlight some of this month’s activities in this month’s edition of flaSH [PDF].

RUBY DUNCAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS READY FOR KIDS

The first SHARCHITECTURE 2 story elementary school prototype is ready for the start of school. The two story plan, arranged around a central outdoor courtyard learning area, uses less land than conventional 1 story facilities with additional value added classroom area. The two story plan also facilitates grade separation and passive security opportunities. The use of color is important in the design to provide a more “kid friendly” environment and an individual identitiy for the school. The facility is also designed to meet the CCSD (web link) 30,000 BTU/sf/yr energy budget.

TAYLORSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL UPDATED FOR 2010

The administration area and classroom remodel at the Taylorsville Elementary School (web link) is ready to welcome students and parents for the start of the new school year in the Granite School District. The design of the remodel focused on improving the efficiency and security of the reception office, administrative and lobby areas of the school.
The new administrative area has improved visibility to help staff control access to the school. Low VOC finishes and recycled materials help make the Taylorsville ES more green!

CONGRATULATIONS, ERIC ROBERTS!

There are lots of things to say about Eric Roberts (web link). On August 26, 2010, we’ll be able to say all those things about
Eric Roberts, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP. Please send your congratulations (and words of wisdom) to our newest architect, and spread the word! We searched for a funny joke about architects to put in this space, but guess what? The internet does not seem to have funny jokes about architects. Guess the internet hasn’t met Eric Roberts

A triumvirate of great stories highlights this month’s edition of flaSH [PDF]. Enjoy the benefits of being green and sustaining our communities through medicine and historic renovations.

Granite School District Taylorsville Elementary School

SHARCHITECTURE and Onyx Construction have commenced the renovation of historic Taylorsville Elementary School in West Valley, Utah. This renovation to the 50 year old school will create a better learning environment for the students. SHARCHITECTURE applauds Granite School District’s commitment to established schools. “Preservation-based community development not only protects our heritage, but also …increases civic participation, and bolsters a community’s sense of place,” according to the Trust for Historic Preservation

Reaping the Financial Benefits of Going Green

SHARCHITECTURE has helped our clients obtain over $3,000,000 in tax rebates and cash rebates in the first half of 2010. Working with clients to identify financially viable programs to maximize the payback of going green is part of our ongoing analysis of building and system design and life cycle assessment for projects. Existing buildings have some of the same opportunities as well, and can be retrofitted and upgraded with positive financial returns. Contact Eric M Roberts for more info.

VMSN Moves One Step Closer to Realization

Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada was approved for their new flagship location on Martin Luther King Boulevard in the City of Las Vegas. The non-profit medical group is building a 12,000 SF facility to provide access to health care to the Southern Nevada’s working families. The care center will initially focus on primary care, pediatrics, prenatal care and social services with additional services added in the future. Occupancy is planned for December 2011.
