We have three exciting stories in this month’s edition of flaSH [PDF]. One project is complete while two other projects received LEED certification.

SWPB Campos Parole and Probation Building Complete Construction

Located on a busy intersection in downtown Las Vegas, the new 180,000 SF building for the Division of Parole and Probation replaces the original 1 story building built on the same site in 1954. The 6 story building features three levels of office on top of a three level parking structure. Public access is limited to the first level and employees enter from the secured parking deck. The LEED Silver equivalent facility features exterior sun control louvers along the south elevation and a six story, curved concrete wall protects the west elevation. Interior finishes feature poured terrazzo floors with recycled glass aggregate and abundant natural light in all public and employee areas. Special consideration was given to integrating the department’s stringent security requirements for the facility and the safety of the employees.

CCSD Northwest Career and Tech Academy

Mark McGinty of SHARCHITECTURE and Paul Gerner of CCSD recently presented the USGBC LEED Certification plaque to the CCSD Board of Trustees for the Northwest Career and Technichal Academy. “The Northwest Career and Tech Academy’s LEED Certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fredrizzi, President and CEO USGBC. “The project efficiently uses our natural resources and makes an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit future generations to come.”

Best of ‘09 Green Building

In more green news, Cashman Equipment officially received LEED Gold certification in September and was named the SW Contractor Best of 09 Green Building in December. “The judges commended the project team’s approach to LEED and sustainability at every level.” During construction, 97% of construction waste was diverted away from landfills, which translates to 4,689 tons of material that was recycled in the 310,000 SF seven building complex.

One project is nearing completion while another is getting started and a member of our team spoke with Tony Illia at Las Vegas Business Press regarding ‘pencil-ready’ projects.

Englestad Health Sciences at CSN

The new 2 story, 18,000 SF addition to the Englestad Allied Health Sciences Building at CSN is progressing towards its summer 2010 completion. The fast-tracked project is designed for specialized training in pulmonary, respiratory and polysom sciences and includes 5 multi- purpose classrooms, two specialty labs, Polysom lab, Sim rooms, debriefing rooms, 28 faculty offices and work rooms. The building is being delivered through a CMAR process with Core Construction as the general contractor. SHArchitecture worked closely with CSN’s staff and directors to provide programing, building design, interior design and equipment and technology coordination for the state of the art facility. The addition is designed to blend seamlessly with the existing building.

Eric Roberts In the News

“Southern Nevada — long defined by boom growth — once proudly boasted of its billion-dollar developments built at breakneck speed. They were monumental-sized undertakings that added thousands of new jobs and new residents in the process. But things have changed. Last year’s economic downturn has crippled local resort and entertainment development activity causing projects to be canceled, delayed or deferred.”

You can read the article in full at the Las Vegas Business Press or Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Ruby Duncan Elementary School for CCSD

Construction is out of the ground for the new 2 story Ruby Duncan Elementary School in North Las Vegas. The 2 story school, designed by SHArchitecture, saves over 2 acres of land compared to conventional single story layouts. The LEED Silver equivalent facility is designed to use half the energy budget of the previous schools while costing 1/3 less than previous facilities. The school is scheduled to be open for the 2010 school year.
