SHARCHITECTURE and the Boys and Girls Clubs have worked together for over 18 years. Together, we have built five new clubs and renovated and updated several others. The Elko Clubhouse is the first permanent home for the Elko Club which is currently operating out of portable classroom units. The City of Elko gave the club a triangular shaped sloping site adjacent to a city park and elementary school in the central part of town. The economical design – essentially a pre-engineered metal building – was driven by the limited buildable area and the existing slope. The programming resulted in a positive approach to separate administration from kids programs, public from club programs and teen center from younger members. The Clubhouse is a good example of sustainable design in which basic systems are upgraded with user-friendly features to provide manageable, common-sense energy savings. Building orientation, daylighting, shading, thermal controls, and superior indoor air quality make this a Club that responds to its environment and its users.
