The program completed for the Kauri Sue Hamilton School included providing special education and life skills training to students with severe physical needs between the ages of 3 months to 22 years. The building had administration suites, Physical Therapy, Music Therapy, Vocational Labs, Dual classrooms are self contained with a shared restroom to ensure student safety at all times. There is a therapy treatment swimming pool, gymnasium and an onsite medical clinic. A two story atrium provides an abundance of natural light and a location for school activities and in the evening a space for community activities.
In order to successfully deliver on our program we conducted weekly meetings with the existing school’s Principal, the teachers and the therapy specialist twice a week for one month to develop a program, the square footage needed and the required adjacencies. We walked the existing school, and asked how they taught their program, why that taught it that way and how did the existing space influence their teaching. After we understood this, we simply asked them, what would you change about your space. We used this to develop the program and the design and continually went back to review the design with the user and the District and made sure we were addressing their needs and working within the School Districts budget and time line. In addition to this we provided complete architectural services for the entire project. The entire program, design, construction documents and biding occurred within six months.
