For our own new office environment, the challenge was to convert an existing dark, enclosed office space into an inviting, user-friendly space and take advantage of abundant natural light with exposure on three sides. The new space was also designed to reflect the open, collaborative environment of the studio type office. With these goals in mind the space was gutted and all enclosed office were removed. The final layout has only three doors -the restroom, the janitor’s closet and the IT room. Administrative assistants, architects and principals sit in open cubicle workstations clustered around project collaboration areas. The open office connects everyone in a positive work environment by allowing information to be more freely shared and the opportunity for more “accidental communication.” The open layout also allows natural light to penetrate the space from three exposures so everyone has a view outside. Rotating project exhibits are accommodated by display rails throughout the office which allows graphics and presentations to be changed on a regular basis allowing the space to be reinvigorated with new art.
