LightShow West – Roundtable Conversation

Senior Design Associate, Victoria Cousino (second from the right), spoke on a panel at the LightShow West conference with other design and construction professionals to share their considerations, deciding factors and approaches to installing lighting specified to impact circadian and wellness outcomes.

The panel of Project Managers shared their considerations, deciding factors and approaches to installing lighting specified to impact circadian and wellness outcomes. The open discussion looked at the challenges and opportunities for A/E/D professionals to weigh in on how to balance critical circadian lighting and controls specifications with that of stakeholder budget demands and current energy code conflicts.

The event looked at a number of items concerning lighting, including:
  • Conflict resolution between PM, GCs, and stakeholders when installed units differ from specified SPDs of circadian light sources.
  • What the PM, GC’s and PA’s need to know from design teams prior to VE evaluations and selection.
  • The changing role of informed PMs while science and technical bodies are formulating our understating of how circadian targeted lumina Ires and controls are not to be thought of as “ordinary lighting” and must be installed, maintained, and serviced with greater scrutiny and care as compared to fluorescent or HID light sources.
  • Job site options, opportunities and downsides of providing basic circadian targeted education for subcontractors involved with installing multiple light sources and controls specified for exacting wellness benefits; particularly challenging when no existing codes, practice standards, or union dictates consideration.
